Insights from our conservancy team on restoration, conservation, and community engagement.
Our riparian restoration project completed in October 2025 has transformed 2km of riverbank. Native species are thriving, water quality has improved by 40%, and we've seen a 25% increase in bird diversity. The community's involvement was crucial—over 200 volunteers participated in planting and monitoring.
— Bruce Amalemba, Conservation Team
The November 2025 tree-planting initiative brought together 500 community members. We planted 1,000 native trees, bringing our total to over 5,000. These trees will sequester approximately 250 tons of CO₂ annually while providing habitat for wildlife and improving soil stability.
— Ernest Omusula, Environmental Coordinator
Our sustainable tourism model has created 200 direct and indirect jobs. Local guides, artisans, and hospitality workers are now earning sustainable incomes while preserving their cultural heritage. Visitor feedback shows 95% satisfaction with cultural experiences.

"Where cascading waters meet living culture—Ambururu is more than a place; it's a promise to future generations."
Located in Siaya County, Kenya, the Ambururu Waterfall Conservancy was founded in 2020 by Justice Anthony Ombwayo to protect the stunning Ambururu Waterfalls and honor Luo heritage. Spanning 500 hectares, it focuses on reforestation, wildlife protection, and preserving the Yala Valley's ecosystem.
Deep in Siaya County, Kenya, the Ambururu Waterfall Conservancy reflects a heartfelt commitment to nature and culture. Founded in 2020 by Justice Anthony Ombwayo, a jurist with a passion for the land, this sanctuary protects the Ambururu Waterfalls and the Yala Valley, a place cherished by the Luo people for generations.
"The waterfalls have been our ancestors' witness for centuries. We must preserve them for our children." — Justice Ombwayo
The story begins with the Luo's settlement in the Yala Valley around 1900, where they built a life in harmony with the river and its falls. The name "Ambururu," meaning waterfall in Dholuo, echoes the sound of water over ancient rocks—a connection to their ancestors.
In the 1970s, Ombwayo, inspired by his childhood in the valley, saw the growing threats of deforestation and pollution and dreamed of preserving this heritage.
Today, the 500-hectare conservancy thrives through the hard work of local people. Over 5,000 native trees have been planted to restore the forest, water quality is monitored to keep the falls clean, and wildlife like colobus monkeys and fish eagles are protected.
The community also keeps Luo traditions alive with music, dance, and storytelling passed down by elders.
Visitors are welcome to explore the conservancy on foot, staying in simple eco-friendly lodges powered by solar energy. Their support helps fund projects that provide jobs and education for over 200 local residents.
